NAVIGATING THE STUDENT-ATHLETE'S COLLEGE SEARCH & RECRUITING PROCESS #RECRUIT
Nick Michael, Odyssey College SearchThe course is designed to educate high school student-athletes and their parents about the best ways to navigate the often confusing and generally stressful college search and recruiting maze. The "pros and cons" of playing intercollegiate varsity college sports will be discussed as will the benefits derived from athletics which aid the college admissions process. The first session will describe how being a student-athlete can make the college selection process both easier and harder than it is for non-athletes. It will delve into the factors that influence a student's college preference criteria, 12 to 18- month timelines, define recruiting terminology, describe the differences between the three major NCAA divisions with respect to financial aid, time commitment, etc., as well as the National Clearing House for Student Eligibility, and explain how a student-athlete can get noticed and put on a coach's list of prospects. The course will also identify what college coaches and admissions personnel are looking for, both academically and athletically, how to communicate with a coach within NCAA approved guidelines and how to leverage athletic ability into a college acceptance letter. Specific academic and athletic action items will also be outlined for each year of high school. The second session is will show parents and student-athletes how to develop and implement a proto-typical plan which addresses the issues identified in the first session and how to establish a successful path for identifying the best college options &endash; academically and athletically - for each student-athlete. Nick Michael founded Odyssey College Search to provide student-athletes and parents with a resource for the college search and athletic recruiting process. His background is in marketing, strategic planning and process management, and his children are student-athletes. Limit 25.
