USPS PUBLIC BOATING COURSE #BOAT
USPS Experienced Boating Staff Members
Whether you are an experienced boater, a novice or just interested in boating, this course is for you. Individuals, couples and entire families are invited to participate in learning all aspects of boating during this 5 week course. Emphasis will be placed in boating safety. Topics covered are:
• boating terminology
• how to read and understand nautical charts
• common and useful nautical knots
• aids to navigation and how to effectively use them
• rules of the road and avoiding collisions
• use of marine VHF radio and marine compass
• all aspects of safe boat trailering
• safely handling your boat in all types of conditions
• proper anchoring techniques
• required government regulations including the necessary documentation to operate a boat
Having knowledge of boating fundamentals will add to your safety and confidence on the water as well as contribute to a much more enjoyable experience for you and your crew. Student text books and charts will be supplied. Each person completing this course will receive a USPS Certificate of Completion which satisfies the requirements for the official safe boating certificate required in some states. All class instructors are experienced boating USPS members.
