INTRO TO STRENGTH TRAINING WITH FREE WEIGHTS FOR WOMEN #STREN

Judy Wolff

After age 25, the average person loses muscle every year. This loss of lean muscle tissue has a negative impact on strength, metabolism and body composition (ratio of lean tissue to fat), which affects overall fitness and appearance. Strength training is a proven way to counteract the effect of weight gain. Among the many health and fitness benefits of strength training are increased metabolism, so you burn more calories at rest, and increased bone density, which can help prevent osteoporosis. Strengthening your bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments reduces your risk of injury in performing daily activities as well as sports. In this class, for less than the cost of 2 personal training sessions as a local gym, you can learn the basics of strength training so you can work out at home. You'll learn to perform a variety of exercises using free weights (dumbbells) to strengthen all the major muscles. You'll learn strengthening exercises you can perform using your own body weight and inexpensive household materials for resistance. You'll also learn how to put these exercises together into an effective, safe, whole-body workout, with an emphasis on improving functional strength for day-to-day activities (like carrying groceries) instead of body building or power lifting. Please bring a set of dumbbells (2-5 lbs) and a mat or towel. Students with medical restrictions should bring a release from their physician to the first class. Judy Wolff is a certified personal trainer by the American Council on Exercise and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She was introduced to strength training in an AB Community Ed. class in 1994. She now holds several world records in the bench press in the women's 55-59 age class. Limit 7.
