MAXIMIZING WEB RESEARCH

 

Christopher Hickey

This course will familiarize students with more efficient and safer Web research using the latest Internet research tools and techniques. This course will introduce the skills and tools needed to become an open source researcher. Topics covered include: Beyond Google Searches &emdash; Learn how to define and utilize specialized search engines and directories and tailor results to their needs. Students will also be able to use various techniques to streamline and enhance their analytical research. Finding Deep Web Content &emdash; Understand the Deep Web and its importance, and be able to use tools and techniques to access its information. Students will be able to find information that the search engines miss. Web Security and Anonymization &emdash; Learn safe web browsing, understand cookies, realize the footprints they leave behind, and learn ways to mitigate their digital footprint through various anonymization techniques. Planning Efficient & Focused Web Research &emdash; Plan and execute an efficient Web research project. Evaluating Web Information Resources &emdash; Learn to evaluate elements of a Web source including site ownership, site visit traffic, site authors, and site's biases. Managing Information Flow Effectively &emdash; Find out how to harness the power of RSS feeds, RSS readers and Google Alerts including the screening out of unwanted information. Students are encouraged to bring a laptop. Christopher Hickey is a 20 year veteran of the national intelligence community as an intelligence analyst and collector. Hickey has been instrumental in many intelligence training efforts as an instructor, curriculum designer and program designer including open source research.  A graduate of the US Naval Academy, Naval War College, and the University of Maryland's School of Public Affairs, Hickey is currently teaching open source research and intelligence topics at the collegiate level and for state, local, and federal agencies.
